Nicobar finds a home in Bangalore
Good Earth’s sister brand, Nicobar is a modern Indian way of looking at the world, says Simran Lal, CEO and founder. “It’s everyday living and an Indian soul with a global outlook. Where Good Earth is about heritage and craftsmanship, Nicobar is all about looking forward, with a fun, tropical vibe,” she elaborates. The concept seems to have resonated well with the audience it was meant for — what with their third outlet all set to throw open its doors to the public, barely six months into the brand’s launch in Mumbai’s Kala Ghoda neighborhood and as an e-store.
Spread across a sprawling 2,800 square feet, the Bengaluru outlet, the biggest so far, is located at the same location as the Good Earth flagship store off Lavelle Road. “We had all this extra space, that we thought we could put to good use. It fit in with what we wanted and our expansion plans for Nicobar, so we went right ahead,” Lal explains. Divided into two levels, special attention has been given to textures with rattan and basket weaving techniques standing out as decor elements, complemented by muted wooden accents and tones of grey and white. The space is designed to look and feel like a designer’s studio and as Lal puts it, “encourages one to linger and enjoy an unhurried shopping experience.”
Take it easy
A relaxed, comfortable fit, simple, clean lines and contemporary silhouettes are the hallmarks of
Nicobar’s apparel. And apart from a regular men’s and women’s wear section, the Travel line is designed to make things easier for those constantly on the go, with casual and breezy tanks, Henleys, shirts, slouchy trousers, yoga pants, swing- and shirt-dresses, light jackets and scarves, apart from tote and sling bags, weekenders, clutches, and little pouches.
The store opens with their festive collection, Sitara which is an attractive mix of ivory and gold tones with a hint of fuchsia. Delicate Chanderi silk has been crafted into long kurtas, overlays, elegant shirt dresses and Jodhpur pants, with minimalistic stripes, woodblock prints and irregular polka dots. The fashion forward man will be happy to know that they have collaborated with designer Suket Dhir to bring out a special capsule collection of shirts, kurtas and Nehru jackets in earthy, autumnal hues.

An extensive homeware range promotes relaxed, informal living with collections such as Sandstone (mugs and saucer in neutral shades with glazed detailing), Verandah (table linen and cushion covers in a splash of colours from jade to charcoal, that lets you mix and match) and Kumarakom (cushion covers, tableware and table linen in shades of charcoal and indigo with traditional motifs).
While the plan is to set up at multiple locations in Mumbai and Delhi, Lal hopes to expand to other metros such as Chennai and Hyderabad should the right opportunity come along. “For now, we’re focused on promoting Nicobar as a digital store,” she signs off.
